The MAX30101 and MAX32664 pulse oximeter heart rate sensors are I2C based biosensors that use two chips from Maxim Integrated: the MAX32664 biosensor hub and the MAX30101 pulse oximeter and heart rate module. The latter is responsible for all detection, while the former is a very small and fast Cortex M4 processor that can handle all algorithm calculations, digital filtering, pressure/position compensation, advanced R-wave detection, and automatic gain control. We provide a Qwiic connector that can easily connect to I2C data cables, but you will need to connect two additional lines. This motherboard is very small, measuring 1 inch x 0.5 inches (25.4mm x 12.7mm), which means it can fit well on your fingers without being too bulky.
MAX30101 uses its internal LED to reflect light back from the arteries and arterioles in the subcutaneous layer of the finger, and senses how much light is absorbed through its photodetector to perform all sensing. This is called photoplethysmography. This data is passed to MAX32664 and analyzed by MAX32664, which applies its algorithm to determine heart rate and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). The SpO2 results are reported as the percentage of oxygen saturated hemoglobin. It also provides useful information such as sensor confidence in its reports and convenient finger detection of data points. In order to fully utilize the sensors, we have developed an Arduino library to easily adjust all possible configurations.
The Qwiic connect system is an ecosystem consisting of I2C sensors, actuators, shields, and cables, making prototyping faster and less prone to errors. All circuit boards that support Qwiic use a universal 1mm pitch, 4-pin JST connector. This reduces the required PCB space, and polarized connections mean you won't make the wrong connections.
